Wild Kiwi: Adventure travel in New Zealand

From mountain hikes to sunny beaches, every day is different.

New Zealand offers endless natural splendor, and there's no better way to travel here than with our lively gay adventure group. On this unforgettable trip, we'll become a part of New Zealand's outdoor wonders as we try out the myriad sports that this friendly country offers: Rafting, canyoning, hiking, kayaking, and more.

We begin at the north tip of the scenic South Island, biking among the vineyards that crown the hillsides above Nelson. Then we spend three days kayaking and hiking among the tiny islands and golden beaches of Abel Tasman Bay, while spending two nights in comfortable but remote lodges.

From Nelson, we drive along the rugged west coast of the South Island to Cape Foulwind and Punakaiki, famous for its layered, wind- and water-eroded seacliffs and blowholes. Here we have a chance to try our hand at blackwater rafting before heading to Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Here you'll have the unique experience of hiking to glacial ice caves by day; then in the evening, you can look for glow worms in a fern-decorated rain forest.

Finally, in the lakeside towns of Wanaka and Queenstown, pick from a rainbow of sports: whitewater rafting, rappelling through a waterfall, paragliding, panning for gold, mountain biking, wine-tastings and winery tours, rock climbing, and that much-anticipated bungy jump. Now you know why New Zealand is considered the adventure capital of the world -- and there's no better way to tour it than with our lively gay and lesbian group.

Highlights:

  • Biking among the vineyards above Nelson.
  • Kayak, hike or ride a boat for three days around the wind-sculpted islands of Abel Tasman Park.
  • Hike into the icy world of Fox or Franz Josef Glaciers, then relax in soothing Glacier Hot Pools.
  • Splash, leap, and rappel through a deep chasm, in the distinctly Down-Under sport known as canyoning.
  • Bungy jump from the bridge over Kawarau Gorge, where this sport began.
  • Pick from a long list of other adventures: Whitewater rafting, blackwater rafting, alpine hiking, mountain biking, jet boating, horseback riding, canoeing, and trout fishing, just for starters.
  • Please note that the tour itinerary will run in reverse in 2014, starting in Queenstown and ending in Nelson. The tour starts two days after Sydney Mardi Gras for anyone who would like to join the festivities there then join our tour.
