Why Iceland? If you've talked with anyone who's visited this country, odds are you're already intrigued by it. First, Iceland, like its Scandinavian neighbors, is gay-friendly. Second, its unique landscape, combining naturally warm rivers and frosty glaciers, barren moonscapes and steaming geysers, is unlike anything you've seen before. And yet Iceland is close -- only five hours from the east coast.
- North of the Moon. Mountain biking in Iceland: Iceland's unique landscape ranges from rainbow-shrouded waterfalls, deep in the lush wilderness, to lava fields where the first astronauts practiced their moon-walking, to steaming geysers and hot springs. Jules Verne's adventurers set out from Iceland on their Journey to the Center of the Earth, and while we'll stay mostly aboveground, mountain biking in the South Highlands region will often leave us feeling like one of Verne's explorers. Five days on mountain bikes take us amidst the colorful mountains and to the still-active volcano of Hekla. At either end of the trip, there's time to enjoy the lively capital of Reykjavik.
